The decor you decorate will have an impact on the person you end up with in life, according to a new research from Pew Research Center.
Pew’s research found that people in the West have a greater appreciation for the simple decor they put up in their homes, as well as in their cars and other possessions.
It found that nearly one-third of Americans (32%) think a simple home decor is important, compared to 27% who said the same about cars and appliances.
The Pew Research survey also found that many Americans, including those in the Midwest and South, have a strong preference for simple, simple-looking homes, even though most of them consider cars and their components to be more expensive than other items.
In contrast, only 26% of Americans in the Northeast said cars are more important than their homes.
Pew also found a stronger preference for basic decor, with 61% of those in North Dakota, 59% in Oklahoma, and 54% in Mississippi saying simple home décor is important.
And even though Americans in California are much more likely than other parts of the country to think simple home decoration is important — 64% in that state said the home decoration of a family member or a friend is important to them — that preference hasn’t translated to more spending on home decor.
Instead, a plurality (44%) of Americans said they think simple decor is not important at all, while 34% said they are not bothered by the simpleness of a home.
While the Pew Research poll finds Americans tend to be relatively supportive of the simple home design, there are some important caveats.
One is that the Pew study doesn’t ask how much people like the decor they decorate.
For example, when people are asked how much they like the simplicity of the design, just 28% said it was important.
Similarly, while the Pew survey asked whether they like it if their home is simple, only 19% said yes.
And while 46% said a home should have a sense of style and character, just 20% said so.
There is also a caveat about how simple the home should be, especially if it is designed in a way that encourages the people who live there to interact with each other and with other people.
“The question is, ‘How much do you want the person who lives in your home to be able to do those things?'” said Sarah Kustofsky, senior vice president of Pew Research.
When asked how important it is to have a family that is very connected, only 35% of adults said the simplest home design was a good thing for the people in their lives.
As for the idea that simple home decorations can’t change the way people think about homes, Pew found that while a plurality of people said that a simple, easy home is important for them, nearly half (47%) said they want their home to have style and personality.
Another key finding in Pew’s research is that when people think of simple home designs, they often think of homes with lots of decoration, rather than simple home architecture that makes up the majority of homes.
While that may sound like a good idea, it is often difficult to build a house that looks like a small, simple home, Kustoff said.
According to the Pew research, only 18% of people think a home is a small house.
Similarly, fewer than half of people (46%) think that a home with only a single door is a simple design.
A majority of Americans who said they like simple home structures — that is, homes with one or two entrances and exits — said they do not want their house to have any more than two entrances or exits, according the Pew findings.
And less than half (49%) of people who said their homes are simple said their houses should be large enough to have multiple entrances and/or exits.
Yet, there is a caveat to that notion: People who said simple home architectural designs made up more than half their homes did not think they were important, or at least not as important as a home designed to be small.
This finding, along with Pew’s finding that people who do not like simple decor are more likely to say they are bothered by it, shows that there is something to be said for simplicity and simple design in the American dream.
